David Palmer is a composer and pianist from Crewe, Cheshire, UK. He is currently a second year music student at Worcester College, Oxford. He was the 2017-18 president of the Oxford University Music Society, and is currently manager of OUMS Chamber Music (formerly the Oxford University Chamber Music Society).
Before beginning his composition studies with Robert Saxton in Oxford, David studied composition with Matthew Sergeant and piano with Jonathan Middleton at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music, which he attended from 2012-2016. Awards at the JRNCM include the Peter Redfearn Memorial Prize for Composition (2014), the Director’s Prize (2015), and the Friends of the Junior RNCM Ensemble Prize (2016) with Erin Cox. David won the Margaret Thomas Junior Piano Composition Award (2014) for his performance of Fragments  for the Penrith Piano Circle. David currently studies piano with Ronan O’Hora, Head of Keyboard Studies and Advanced Performance Studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
David’s compositions have featured in the New Music North West Festival on two occasions; the most recent being his performance of his composition Nine Short Scenes  with Erin Cox in the 2016 festival. The duo also regularly performed in internal JRNCM events, as well as the external concert series.
David was a composer for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain for two years, where he was tutored by Anna Meredith and Larry Goves. During this time, David’s compositions were performed in the Britten Studio of the Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Birmingham Symphony Hall, the Tate Britain gallery, the Clore Ballroom of the Southbank Centre, and the Music Room of Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. Prior to his time with the NYO, David was tutored by David Horne on the 2014 Sound and Music Summer School.
David has performed twice with the International Lutosławski Youth Orchestra at the Szczecin Philharmonic Hall, Poland. Other orchestral keyboard opportunities include performances with the JRNCM Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ewa Strusinska and the National Youth Orchestra’s Inspire Orchestra conducted by Duncan Ward and Kwame Ryan. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1 was toured around secondary schools in the North-West of England by the NYO Inspire Orchestra to inspire young people to pursue music. In July 2016, David performed the piano solo (/secondo) part to his Concerto with JRNCM Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ewa Strusińska, for his final concert as a JRNCM student.
At university, David has performed with most of the student orchestras, and regularly gives recitals in Oxford. He holds an Instrumental Award scholarship and a scholarship to perform with the University’s contemporary music ensemble (Ensemble Isis). Teaching is now an important part of David’s musical life, and he has a number of piano pupils.
